This past Thursday, my class went out to Hoffmaster State Park to explore dune #4. We climbed an extremely high sandy peak...twice in order to observe the area and sketch the dune in our field journals.
Pitcher's Thistle
This here is a Pitcher's Thistle that we found on the dune. I apologize that it is kind of hard to see in the photos but if you could look past the tall dune grass you can see the thistle.
A Pitcher's Thistle is a threatened plant species on the sand dunes of the Great Lakes. It grows on open sand dunes and can reach about 3 feet tall once fully grown.
